Shea butter is rated 0 on the comedogenic tables this site draws on — one of only two entries out of 88 held at zero — and it is separately flagged by the Malassezia rule published here. Two screens, two criteria, one ingredient, and no contradiction between the answers.

What shea butter is, and how it reaches a label
Shea butter is the fat pressed from the nut of the West African shea tree, and it appears on ingredient lists as Butyrospermum Parkii Butter. Stearic and oleic acid together make up most of its fatty acids, and it carries an unusually large unsaponifiable fraction for a plant fat.
The tree is now classified as Vitellaria paradoxa, but the ingredient name kept the older binomial Butyrospermum parkii, so the label and the botany textbook disagree about the species behind the same material. Refined and unrefined grades differ in colour and scent rather than in the fatty acids either screen reacts to.
Two figures do the explaining further down. Stearic and oleic acid together account for roughly 80 to 90 per cent of the fatty acids, and the unsaponifiable fraction — triterpene alcohols, cinnamic acid esters, tocopherols — is commonly reported between about 3 and 11 per cent, against roughly 1 per cent in most plant oils.

That last row is a gap rather than a clearance. A rule matching the end of a parsed name reaches whole butters and misses their derivatives, which is worth printing plainly.
Where shea butter sits on the published comedogenic list
Shea butter carries a rating of 0 in the reference behind this site’s checker: two of its 88 entries sit below 1, and shea butter and argan oil are the two. A 0 records that a material went through the assay and that nothing beyond the untreated control was observed.

Both entries are held deliberately rather than deleted. Shea butter and argan oil are the ingredients people most expect to see flagged, and dropping them would leave that assumption standing; keeping them at 0 means the checker declines to confirm it. No FDA, EU or global body certifies, audits or issues comedogenic lists. Every circulating version is a private compilation with an author, a method and a cut-off date, and published lists contradict each other on individual materials. A 0 describes one reference on one date, not a settled property of the fat.

Cocoa butter and shea butter are the same kind of material — a solid plant fat used as an emollient — and this list separates them by four points. That is the plainest demonstration that the numbers are per-material test results rather than a property of a category, and where comedogenic ratings come from sets out the rabbit-ear assay behind them and the concentration effect that moves them.
Why the 0 gets doubted anyway
Shea butter is widely assumed to clog pores in spite of that rating, and the assumption has three ordinary sources rather than one: how the material feels, what it is usually formulated alongside, and how thickly people apply it. A number attached to the raw fat answers none of the three.
Heavy reads as clogging
Shea butter is solid at room temperature and leaves a film you can still feel hours later. Texture is the most available evidence anyone has, and thick has stood in for pore-clogging for decades.
The formula around it
Shea butter rarely arrives alone. It sits in rich balms beside esters rated 3 and 4, and dropping the balm drops all of them at once, which credits the result to whichever name is on the front.
Amount and occlusion
The assay graded a material, not a thick layer left on overnight. An occlusive film holds whatever sits under it against the skin for longer, and no published measurement covers that.
Stearic acid is rated 2 on the same published list that rates shea butter 0, and shea butter is mostly stearic and oleic acid. A rating belongs to the material that was tested and cannot be reassembled from the fats inside it.
The uncertainty that remains is duller than either camp’s version. No controlled human study establishes what shea butter at typical use levels does to comedone counts in either direction, and reports of a routine settling down after a shea-heavy balm was dropped are real, unexplained and not a mechanism.
Shea butter and fungal acne: the other answer
Shea butter is flagged by the Malassezia rule this site publishes, and that result is independent of its comedogenic rating. Malassezia yeasts are lipid-dependent: they take fatty acids from their surroundings rather than synthesising their own, and the usable range is roughly C11 to C24.
Shea butter’s two dominant acids sit inside that range with room to spare, stearic acid at C18:0 and oleic acid at C18:1. The rule reaches its answer without that composition, though, because it matches name shape: anything ending in Oil, Butter, Seed Oil, Kernel Oil or Fruit Oil is treated as a plant fat, and Butyrospermum Parkii Butter ends in Butter.
Matching a suffix rather than a roster of plants is deliberate: thousands of species appear in cosmetics and labels rarely give the common name, so a roster promises a completeness it cannot deliver. Who shea butter suits, and who might reasonably skip it
Shea butter suits dry, tight or wind-exposed skin, and suits anyone following the published comedogenic list who wants a plant fat the list does not flag. It is the wrong choice when the working concern is Malassezia folliculitis, because the second screen answers that question and answers it the other way.
Skipping it is reasonable on plainer grounds too. Unrefined grades carry an assertive nutty scent, the film sits heavy under makeup on oily skin, and a balm built around it is awkward to layer under gel textures. If an elimination trial has pointed twice at the same shea-heavy step, that observation about your own skin outranks any published list, including this one.
What to use instead if the concern is folliculitis
If folliculitis rather than comedones is the live question, the swap that changes the answer is a lipid the Malassezia rule cannot reach: a hydrocarbon, a mineral-origin fat, a silicone or a short-chain triglyceride. Each sits on the published exception list for a stated reason, and each gives something up.

None of those five appears among the 86 rated entries on the comedogenic list either, so the swap does not trade one screen’s flag for the other’s. The condition matters, though: if the concern is comedones, replacing shea butter with petrolatum changes nothing the comedogenic list was measuring.
Where a list check is the wrong tool
A published-list check answers one narrow question: is this name a member of this set. It cannot say why a routine changed, cannot see how much shea butter a balm contains, and treating a membership result as a prediction repeats the overreach it was meant to correct.
