Yuka alternatives: what four label scanners actually check
A Yuka alternative is worth looking for when the barcode does not resolve on a US shelf, when a single 0–100 score is the whole answer, or when you want the ingredient reasoning rather than a grade. Yuka reports 28 million users in the United States and 85 million worldwide on its own press page.
This page compares Yuka, Open Food Facts, Bobby Approved and LabelPeek on eight concrete points, then says plainly who should stay where they are. LabelPeek is our own product, so its limits get their own section rather than a footnote.
Why people look for a Yuka alternative
The three reasons that come up repeatedly are a scan that fails on American products, a score that arrives without its reasoning, and a scope mismatch — the shopper wants an ingredient explanation rather than a grade. None of these are defects in Yuka’s design; they are the cost of a barcode-and-score model.
The barcode does not resolve
A barcode app can only answer for products already in its database. On a US shelf full of regional and store brands, some scans return nothing, and no app can say anything useful until the record exists.
One number, no reasoning
A 0–100 score compresses nutrition, additives and organic status into one figure. That ranks two products quickly, and it does not show which ingredient moved the number, or by how much.
The question is about an ingredient
Someone checking one additive, or one skincare ingredient, needs a named match against a stated list. A grade for the finished product is an answer to a different question.

That scale is why the alternative question gets asked so often. An app used by tens of millions of people sets the expectation for every scanner that follows it, including this one, and most searches for a replacement are really searches for a different kind of answer.
How Yuka, Open Food Facts, Bobby Approved and LabelPeek compare
Four apps answer four different questions. Yuka scores a scanned product, Open Food Facts publishes the underlying data, Bobby Approved applies one curator’s grocery rules, and LabelPeek matches a pasted ingredient list against a reference printed on the same page. Bobby Approved is the FlavCity grocery scanner built by Bobby Parrish, and it is routinely confused with an unrelated subscription tracker sharing the name; the Bobby Approved alternative comparison separates the two entities before comparing anything, and the head-to-head on Yuka versus Bobby Approved sets an algorithmic score against a curated verdict without LabelPeek in the frame at all. Two other pairings are worth reading before switching, because they turn on the same question of where an answer comes from rather than on which app is better. What a single score cannot carry
A score is a ranking device, not a record of where an ingredient stands legally. Titanium dioxide shows the gap: it was removed from the EU list of permitted food additives by Regulation (EU) 2022/63, effective 7 February 2022, and remains permitted in the US at up to 1% by weight of the food (21 CFR 73.575).
The same split runs through the colour additives. In the EU, products containing E129 must carry the statement “may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children” under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex V. In the US, the same dye is banned from foods served or sold in California K-12 public schools from 31 December 2027 under the California School Food Safety Act, AB 2316 (2024). One ingredient, two jurisdictions, two different obligations — and no single number that expresses either of them.
That is the design decision behind the ultra-processed food checker: where a restriction exists it is printed with the document it comes from, and where none is recorded the field stays empty instead of being filled with an adjective.
A score tells you where a product sits in a ranking. A citation tells you which document says what, in which country, from which date. Only one of the two can be checked by the person reading it.
LabelPeek and Yuka side by side
Yuka is a released, mature barcode scanner with a very large user base and a paid tier. LabelPeek is a web ingredient checker whose app has not shipped. Comparing the two is only useful if that asymmetry is stated first, so it appears in the card below rather than at the bottom of the page.

Who should stay on Yuka
Stay on Yuka if the job is comparing two packaged products in an aisle in under ten seconds. Nothing on this page replaces a working barcode scanner with a large product database, an offline mode and a dietary-filter set, and trading that away for citations is a poor exchange when speed is the actual requirement.
Two conditions make staying the clear call. If you already pay for Premium, offline use is the feature with no equivalent here, because a text checker still needs the label in front of you and a keyboard. And if your basket is mostly national brands, the database gap that sends people looking for alternatives rarely bites in the first place.
Where LabelPeek is the wrong choice
LabelPeek is the wrong tool if you want to point a phone at a shelf today. The web checkers read only text pasted in by hand, there is no barcode lookup behind them, and the app was not listed in any store as of 10 August 2026. A tool that has not shipped cannot be the recommendation for in-store use, and pretending otherwise would be the fastest way to lose the argument.
It is also the wrong tool for nutrition questions. LabelPeek reads ingredient lists, not the nutrition panel, so sugar per serving, sodium and protein sit outside what it answers. Open Food Facts publishes Nutri-Score and NOVA group for exactly that, and gives the underlying data away under ODbL 1.0.
On skincare it will disagree with other tools, and that is deliberate. No regulator anywhere certifies or issues a comedogenic list, published lists contradict each other on the same ingredient, and so the pore-clogging ingredients checker prints its list in full on the page. A tool that hides its list cannot be argued with, only believed.
Testing an alternative in one grocery run
Switching scanners is cheap to test and expensive to guess at. One shopping trip with both apps open answers the question no comparison table can: whether the products you actually buy are in the database, and whether the answer you get back is the one you were asking for.

Scan ten things you already buy
Not ten interesting things — ten items from your normal basket. Count how many return no record at all. That number, rather than an average review score, decides whether a scanner works in your stores.
Step 2
Read the reasoning, not the grade
For three of the ten, look for the ingredient behind the verdict. If the app names it and points at where the rule comes from, the answer survives being questioned by someone else in the household.
Step 3
Check one label no scanner can see
Bulk bins, deli counters and imported packaging often carry no usable barcode. Paste the printed ingredient text into a text-based checker and see whether it gets further than the scan managed.
