Whether seed oils belong in a diet is contested, and the nutrition research is not settled either way. This page takes no position in that argument and makes no claim about health. Which oils the term seed oil usually covers
The term usually covers eight refined oils — canola, soybean, corn, cottonseed, sunflower, safflower, grapeseed and rice bran. No regulator defines the phrase, so published lists differ at the edges. What the eight share is processing: they are extracted and refined at industrial scale rather than pressed in a kitchen.
No official list exists
Nobody issues the definition. Two writers can each publish a seed oil list and disagree on rice bran or on high oleic sunflower, and neither list is the authority the other has to answer to.
One oil, several printed names
Canola appears as canola oil, rapeseed oil and refined canola oil. A tool that stores one of the three and not the others will miss the same oil on two labels out of three.
One name that hides the answer
Vegetable oil is flagged as a refined oil, but the phrase does not say which oil is in the pack. No text checker and no barcode database can resolve that — only the manufacturer knows.

One entry in that group is not a seed oil at all. Palm oil is pressed from fruit and kernel, and it sits with the refined oils because of how it is processed rather than where it comes from.
Label names to watch for on a US package
Twelve reference entries carry 35 spellings between them, and the table below is that reference printed out verbatim. The left column is what the package says; the middle column is the entry a match resolves to; the right column lists the other spellings that resolve to the same entry.

One row deserves a caveat, and it is the vegetable oil row. The reference holds that phrase as an umbrella for one or more refined plant oils, so the flag is specific about presence and silent about identity. Qualifiers are stripped before matching, so organic canola oil lands on the canola entry rather than falling through as unknown text.
Why vegetable oil hides which oil was used
Vegetable oil is a collective term. It tells you the fat came from a plant and stops there, which means a label can be fully compliant and still leave the specific oil unnamed. Some US packages narrow it with a parenthetical such as soybean and/or cottonseed oil — a list of candidates, not a statement of contents.
That wording is the practical ceiling on every tool here. No scanner can resolve what the package declined to state, and the honest response is to name the limit rather than pass over it. Yuka
Yuka scans a barcode and returns a single score out of 100 with a colour band, covering food and cosmetics in one app, and reports 28 million users in the United States out of 85 million worldwide. Its published weighting is built around nutritional quality, additives and organic certification, so an oil moves the number through the nutrition side rather than arriving as a named flag. The product record it shows carries the ingredient list, which is where a reader avoiding one oil will find it. Premium, from $10 a year in the US, adds search without scanning, offline use, unlimited history and dietary filters, and there is no advertising in either tier. Bobby Approved
Bobby Approved is the FlavCity grocery scanner built by Bobby Parrish, and it answers with an approve or avoid verdict drawn from ingredient standards he publishes himself. That is a different answer from a score: one person’s criteria, applied consistently and stated in his own words rather than derived from a formula. For a reader who has already taken a position on refined oils, a curated standard can match it more closely than an algorithm does — or diverge from it, which is equally worth knowing before installing. Open Food Facts
Open Food Facts is a non-profit, crowd-sourced database showing 4.6 million products on its homepage counter, and it stores the ingredient text a contributor transcribed from the pack. That makes it the only one of the four where the raw material behind the answer is downloadable: the whole database is published under the Open Database License 1.0, so filtering every record for canola oil is possible for anyone comfortable with a dataset. The trade is coverage, which varies by product and by how recently a volunteer updated the entry. LabelPeek
LabelPeek is a web checker, not an app: you paste an ingredient list, and the match runs entirely in your browser with no account and nothing uploaded. The food checker compares each parsed line against 74 published markers of industrial processing, twelve of which are the refined oils in the table above, and the full list is printed beside the checker so a result can be argued with. Output has three states rather than two — matched, recognised but not on the list, and not recognised at all. An app with a camera is planned; it was in no store as of 10 August 2026, so the web tools that exist today are what is on offer.
What flagging an oil actually says
A flag on canola oil in the LabelPeek checker is a statement about processing, not about health. The reference records refined oils as markers of industrial production — substances that reach a food on a production line rather than in a kitchen — a claim about technology that a reader can check against the panel in front of them.
No verdict is attached. The checker does not rank the product, does not tell you whether to buy it, and holds no position on whether refined oils belong in a diet. It reports which published entries the label’s words matched, which is all a text matcher can know.
That design carries through the rest of the food side, including the ultra-processed food checker, where a regulatory restriction is printed with the document it comes from and the field is left empty when no restriction is recorded.
Where LabelPeek is the wrong choice
LabelPeek is the wrong choice in a shop aisle. The web checker reads only text pasted by hand, no barcode lookup sits behind it, and no LabelPeek app was listed in any store as of 10 August 2026. For comparing two packs with a phone camera, a released scanner does that job today.
It is also the wrong choice when the label refuses to be specific. A pack reading only vegetable oil gets flagged as a refined oil and nothing more, because the phrase carries no identity to resolve — and that limit is not a gap in the reference but a gap in what the manufacturer chose to print. And it answers nothing about the question most people arrive with. Whether to avoid seed oils is a dietary decision, and a text matcher has no standing in it — that belongs with a dietitian or a physician who knows your circumstances. Checking one label for seed oils in three steps
Testing a checker takes one package and about a minute. Use something you already buy rather than an obvious offender, because the interesting result is what happens on an ordinary label with a long ingredient panel and a couple of names nobody recognises.

Copy the whole ingredient panel
Type or paste every line, including the part after “contains 2% or less of”. Oils are frequently in that tail, and stopping at the first comma is how they get missed.

Read the unrecognised count first
Before the flags, look at how many lines the tool could not identify. A clean verdict over four unread lines is a gap in the data, not a finding about the food.

Check the printed list for what is missing
If your oil is not among the flags, confirm the published list holds it at all. A name no list holds looks identical on screen to a name that was checked and cleared.
